Grease Fittings
Grease Fittings: Essential Lubrication Components
Grease fittings - commonly known as grease zerk fittings, zerk grease fittings, or zerk fittings - are used in machining applications, agricultural machinery, the automotive industry, and similar settings to dispense industrial lubricants like lubricating grease. When the zerk is threaded into the designated application surface, it serves as a contact point for the
grease gun and mating coupler. The gun disperses the grease through an attached
hose or
extension pipe, then through a coupler (which connects the hose to the fitting), and into the fitting. This lubrication system helps channel and control the flow of grease while preventing leakage.
Huyett offers a wide selection of zerk fitting types:
- Standard grease fittings: As the most common type of zerk, these components are compatible with most grease guns and couplers and offer durability to hold up against repeated use.
- Ball-type fittings: These fittings reduce the risk of back flow and are offered in straight, 45°, and 90° angled options.
- Hydraulic shut-off fittings: Ideal for use with anti-friction applications, these components shut off at a specific pressure and only reopen when pressure drops to a certain level.
- Leak-proof fittings: Leak-proof zerks are ideal for light lubricants and work well in textile or food industry applications.
- Pin-type fittings: An antiquated design, these fittings feature a pin that creates a positive locking mechanism. They are often used to restore and preserve the original design of old applications.
- Button head fittings: These zerks work well in high-volume, industrial applications where the smooth head reduces the fitting's interference with other components.
- Flush fittings: Flush fittings feature a low-profile head that works well with moving components, where interference could cause additional damage.
- Safety Vent Fittings: With a milled slot in the side, these zerks are ideal for applications that need to prevent over greasing and/or allow for ventilation. These are similar to Huyett's pressure control fittings product line.
Each type of fitting works with a corresponding
grease gun coupler to facilitate lubrication.
Product Benefits
In general, all grease zerks offer the following benefits:
- Reduced Waste: Fittings ensure the lubrication reaches its destination and does not spread to unwanted areas in the machinery.
- Cleaner Lubrication: The fitting keeps the grease from escaping while also preventing overflow.
- Efficient Maintenance: Zerks help simplify the lubrication process, speeding up the maintenance process and reducing the cost of replacing under-lubricated parts.
Purchase Considerations
When selecting your fittings, you need to think about the specifics of your application. You may run into one or several variables that will influence your fastener choice. Here are some common selection criteria for grease fitting applications:
- Environmental conditions like temperature and moisture
- Proximity to other moving parts
- Potential pressure buildup
- Grease distribution volume
- Risk of over greasing
- Risk of back flow
- Grease fitting accessibility once secured

Grease Fitting Installation Tools
Depending on whether you are working with a drive fitting or a threaded fitting, Huyett offers two types of tools to aid installation:
Grease Fitting Multi-Tool: A small hand tool that attaches to threaded fittings for manual installation.
Grease Fitting Drive Tool: A small hand tool that fits overtop drive-type fittings and is hit with a mallet for installation.
