A quick link, also known as a chain repair link, is popular for light-duty applications using low-grade chain (such as 30 grade proof coil chain). As the names suggests, it installs quickly by unscrewing the gate, attaching the link onto two pieces of chain and screwing the link gate back to the closed position (make sure no threads are showing). Quick links can also be used to extend chains or attach a hook, chain shackle, or anchor point.

What Are Quick Links for Rigging?

Quick links are a preferred rigging component for light-duty use with chains, hooks, shackles, and other similar hardware. They are versatile fasteners that offer quick, simple connections in a variety of industries and applications. Huyett offers a selection of chain repair links in 300 stainless steel or carbon steel with polished or zinc clear finishes.

Application Considerations

When using quick links in your rigging application, there are several factors to consider to ensure safe, optimal, and reliable performance.
  • Rated Capacity: Each application will have a load requirement. The rated capacity, also known as a working load limit, communicates the maximum amount of weight the link can safely support in the application. Each of Huyett's links feature a rated capacity in the product details. Note that our links are not recommended for overhead lifting.
  • Environmental Conditions: If the application will be exposed to water, temperature fluctuations, lubrications, or other corrosive elements, it's important to check the chain repair link for damage, as corrosion could affect the fastener's performance. The environmental exposure will also influence the material and finish of the part.
  • Chain Material: Ensure that the material of the chain (or other attaching component) will not negatively impact the link's material, or vice versa. If the two materials will encourage corrosion upon contact, the application's safety and performance is at risk.
  • Regulation Compliance: Lifting and rigging hardware often need to comply with safety regulations during use. Check to see if your application falls under any regulations or standards and if the links must meet specific requirements before or during use.

Benefits

Quick links offer several key advantages for your rigging needs. Here are three common benefits they offer:
  • Versatility: These fasteners feature a simple design that accommodates a wide range of rigging applications. Links connect to multiple types of rigging components to provide connections where they are needed.
  • Secure Connections: Since the link is screwed shut, the connection point offers increased security. This reduces the risk of the gate becoming disconnected in use.
  • Cost Efficiency: These fasteners are a small upfront investment in a long-term, reusable rigging solution. Huyett's product line offers high-quality hardware that is durable and reliable, which means you get more mileage out of your purchased product.

Can You Reuse a Chain Quick Link?

As long as the links remain undamaged and pass inspection, they are reusable. Their simple assembly and disassembly make it easy to quickly move them from one point to another.

How to Measure a Quick Link

There are three key measurements to take for a link. They are:
  • The length: This is measured from the outside of the wire on the top of the link to the outside of the wire on the bottom.
  • The wire diameter: This is the diameter of the metal.
  • The inside width: This is the distance from the inside of the wire on the straight edge to the inside of the gate.
Huyett's links feature metric measurements, so ensure you are clear to work in millimeters for your use case. These measurements, along with the rated capacity, will communicate if the link is a good fit for your application.
