Retaining Ring Tools & Tool Parts
Retaining Ring Tools: Precision Installation & Removal
Retaining ring tools are essential for the efficient installation, removal, and handling of retaining rings and snap rings in industrial, automotive, and manufacturing applications. These tools help confirm proper placement and secure retention of rings on shafts and in bores, reducing the risk of damage to components and improving assembly efficiency. Whether applying an internal retaining ring inside a bore or an external ring onto a shaft, the right tool ensures precision installation and ease of use.
Huyett offers a comprehensive selection of retaining ring tools, including:
- Retaining Ring Applicators: Retaining ring applicators are hand tools designed for the effortless installation of standard inch and metric radial retaining rings. These tools help guide the ring into place reducing the risk of misalignment or damage. Retaining rings “snap” into place when correctly installed with an applicator.
- Retaining Ring Dispensers: Retaining ring dispensers provide an organized way to store and dispense retaining rings for quick and easy access. These dispensers help streamline assembly processes by dispensing retaining rings individually to ease installation and minimize handling errors. They work best with e-clips, circlips, and poodle clips.
- Snap Ring Pliers: Also known as circlip pliers or retaining ring pliers, these installation tools with specialized tips are designed for a particular ring type and are used for installing and removing snap rings. Available in internal and external variations, these pliers feature specially designed tips that securely grip snap rings for controlled placement or removal.
- Snap Ring Plier Tips: Available in various sizes and styles, snap ring plier tips help diversify the usage and extend the life of your tools.
- Retaining Ring Applicator Parts: Retaining ring applicator replacement rails and parts ensure that applicators remain functional and effective. These parts help maintain tool performance and longevity, keeping operations running smoothly.

How to Use Retaining Ring Pliers
- Determine the type of retaining ring pliers needed: internal or external, based on the ring’s placement.
- Insert the tips of the pliers into the holes or slots of the retaining ring.
- For internal rings, squeeze the pliers to compress the ring. For external rings, spread the pliers apart to expand the ring.
- Carefully align and place the retaining ring into its designated groove.
- Release the pliers gradually and allow the ring to snap securely into place.

How to Remove a Retaining Ring Without Pliers
If retaining ring pliers are not readily available, a small pick or small slotted screwdriver can be used to remove retaining rings.
- Work the tip of the tool between the retaining ring and its mating component.
- Gently pry the retaining ring out of its groove, being careful not to mar any machined surfaces.
- As the ring separates from the groove, use a pair of needle‑nose pliers to securely grip the ring to prevent lost hardware. Retaining rings are often under pressure and may become a small projectile if not adequately secured during assembly.
